DAY 1 • Rome
Arrival at Rome airport, meet driver and transfer to the hotel. The rest of the day is at leisure. Accommodation in Rome.
DAY 2 • Rome • Bari
Breakfast at your hotel and transfer to the train station for your departure to Bari. Arrival at the hotel in Bari on your own. Rest of the day at your disposal. Accommodation in Bari.
DAY 3 • Bari
After breakfast at the hotel meet with your tour leader for a guided visit of Bari and its historic center, known as “Bari Vecchia”. Wander through narrow streets and squares nestled inside the city walls, until you reach the Pontifical Basilica of St. Nicholas and the Castello Svevo, with its breathtaking views from inside (castle entrance fee not included). Continue to Piazza Mercantile and see the ancient Column of Justice. After the visit, free time for lunch, explore the city center area for some delicious street food. After lunch free time to visit on your own. Supper and accommodation at your hotel in Bari.
DAY 4 • Bari • Trani • Castel del Monte • Alberobello 189 km
After breakfast, depart for the medieval town of Trani, known as the “Pearl of Puglia”. You will admire its Jewish quarter and majestic cathedral. In the afternoon, visit the Castel del Monte, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Continue to Alberobello, the “città dei Trulli” (city of trulli, dry-stone huts with conical roofs originally built for storage purposes, as well as permanent dwellings), also protected as a World Heritage Site. DAY 5 • Alberobello • Matera • Alberobello • 136 km
After breakfast, depart by bus to Matera, in the Basilicata region, “la città dei sassi” (city of stones), a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Admire the sassi, the cave dwellings and the Romanesque Cathedral that overlooks the city, with its beautiful “Campanile” (Bell Tower). Return to Alberobello in the late afternoon. Supper and accommodation in Alberobello.
DAY 6 • Alberobello • Locorotondo • Ostuni • Lecce • 118 km
After breakfast, depart by bus to Locorotondo. This picturesque town is one of the most beautiful hamlets in Italy. Continue to Ostuni, the “città bianca” (white city), another true gem south of Bari located on the summit of a hill. The region is a producer of top-quality olive oil. Time at leisure to visit the historical center, eat typical delicacies, shop for souvenirs or simply wander in the medieval streets. In the late afternoon, depart to Lecce, the heart of the Salento area. Supper and accommodation in Lecce.
DAY 7 • Lecce • Otranto • Lecce • 93 km
After breakfast, enjoy a 3-hour guided tour of Lecce. Its underlying trait is the baroque style of its buildings such as the cathedral, the Basilica of Santa Croce and Piazza del Duomo. Lunch in Otranto (not included), a 30 minute drive from Lecce. Otranto was dominated by the Greeks, the Romans and the Turks, and traces of this melting pot of cultures can still be seen. Admire the Cathedral that keeps the bones of 813 martyrs in a shrine and its mosaic floors. Supper in Maglie (near Lecce) at “Masseria l’Uliveto”, a typical Salentine large farm serving regional cuisine. Accommodation in Lecce.
DAY 8 • Lecce • Martina Franca • Monopoli • Bari • 179 km
After breakfast, depart to Bari, visit Martina Franca, an elegant Baroque town with churches, noble buildings, and Piazza Plebiscito. Explore the Cathedral, Ducal Palace, and Torre dell’Orologio, followed by free time. Continue through Valle d’Itria, filled with olive trees and vineyards, to Masseria Montenapoleone. Here you will have a cooking experience and learn to make fresh pasta, while enjoying local wines. Savor the lunch made with your creations. In the afternoon, visit Monopoli, a fortified citadel by the sea, then return to your accommodation in Bari.
DAY 9 • Bari • Rome
Breakfast at the hotel. At the time indicated, transfer to the train station for your departure to Rome. Arrival at the train station and transfer to the hotel. Accommodation in Rome.
