DAY 1 • Bari
Arrival in Bari, transfer on your own to your hotel and meet with your tour guide at the hotel. In the afternoon, a guided visit of Bari and its historic center, known as “Bari Vecchia”. Wander through narrow streets and squares nestled inside the city walls, until you reach the Pontifical Basilica of St. Nicholas and the Castello Svevo (entrance fee not included). From inside the castle, enjoy a magnificent view. After the tour free time to visit on your own. Supper and accommodation at your hotel in Bari.
DAY 2 • Bari • Trani • Castel del Monte • Alberobello
After breakfast, depart for the medieval town of Trani, known as the “Pearl of Puglia”. You will admire its Jewish quarter and majestic cathedral. In the afternoon, visit the Castel del Monte, protected as a World Heritage Site. Continue to Alberobello, the “città dei Trulli”, also protected as a World Heritage Site. Trulli are dry-stone huts with conical roofs originally built for storage purposes, as well as permanent dwellings. Supper and accommodation in Alberobello.
DAY 3 • Alberobello • Matera • Alberobello
After breakfast, depart by bus to Matera, in the Basilicata region, “la città dei sassi” (city of stones), a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Admire the sassi, the cave dwellings and the Romanesque Cathedral that overlook the city, with its beautiful “Campanile” (Bell Tower). Return to Alberobello in the evening. Supper and accommodation in Alberobello.
DAY 4 • Alberobello • Locorotondo • Ostuni • Lecce
After breakfast, depart by bus to Locorotondo. This picturesque town is one of the most beautiful hamlets in Italy. Continue to Ostuni, the “città bianca” (white city), another true gem south of Bari located on the summit of a hill. The region is a producer of top quality olive oil and wine. Time at leisure to visit the historical center, eat typical delicacies, shop for souvenirs or simply wander in the medieval streets. In the evening, depart to Lecce, the heart of the Salento area. Supper and accommodation in Lecce.
DAY 5 • Lecce • Otranto • Lecce
After breakfast, a guided tour of Lecce. Its underlying trait is the baroque style of its buildings. Lunch in Otranto (not included), a 30 minute drive from Lecce. Otranto was dominated by the Greeks, the Romans and the Turks, and traces of this melting pot of cultures can still be seen. Admire the Cathedral that keeps the bones of 813 martyrs in a shrine and its mosaic floors. Supper in Maglie (near Lecce) at “Masseria l’Uliveto”, a typical Salentine large farm. Accommodation in Lecce.
DAY 6 • Lecce • Gallipoli • Lecce
After breakfast the morning is dedicated to the town of Gallipoli, a summer spot known for its nightlife, as well as its beautiful beaches whose dunes and pine tree parks are paradise. Free time to discover the center of Gallipoli, the walls, and its yacht filled port. In the afternoon, return to Lecce for accommodation and supper on your own.
DAY 7 • Lecce • Martina Franca • Bari
After breakfast, return to Bari to see the town of Martina Franca, an elegant Baroque village full of churches, noble buildings, and squares. Free time to visit Piazza Plebiscito, the Cathedral, the Ducal Palace and the Torre dell’Orologio. Continue to the Valle d’Itria, a rural area full of olive trees and vineyards. Enjoy lunch in a masseria and a tasting of excellent extra virgin olive oil produced from organic farming. In the afternoon, some free time and then a short drive back to Bari and accommodation.
DAY 8 • Bari • Monopoli • Polignano a Mare • Bari
After breakfast, depart to two of the most prominent coastal places of Puglia: Monopoli and Polignano a Mare. First stop is Monopoli, a fortified citadel overlooking the sea with its medieval churches and castles. The port harbors bright blue fishing boats adding a pop of color against whitewashed walls. The second stop is Polignano a Mare, built on the peak of a cliff, its coastline is characterized by coves, small bays and inlets. Free time for some shopping or an aperitivo in the main square. Return to Bari after the visit, accommodation in Bari.
DAY 9 • Bari
Breakfast at the hotel and depart by your own means.
